January 2024

Sylvia is a 17 year old girl, who comes from a polygamists family of 11 children. Her father is deceased and both wives struggle to survive. Sylvia’s mother is illiterate and unemployed. The family relies on neighbors and well wishers for food. She sold firewood to Sylvia’s primary school in order to pay her school fees. Secondary school was a different story. Unable to raise the school fees, it was three months into the school year, when finally her church held a fundraiser to get her back into school. She attends a local day school, which is a 6 kilometer walk one way. This is a dangerous walk for a girl her age. Sylvia is a hard worker and loves school. The local MGEF board member was contacted and she met with Sylvia and helped her fill out an application. Sylvia is so happy to be able to go to a good boarding school. She no longer has a dangerous long walk to school, and also doesn’t have to worry about being sent home due to lack of school fees.
