Abigael Sakoyian

January 2024,

Abigael is a 15 year old girl, who comes from a family of nine children. Abigael ran away from her home to the local police station, because her father was going to marry her to someone against her will. Of Abigael’s seven sisters, six have been married off, leaving just herself and her younger sister unmarried. Abigael knew what her future would be if she didn’t run away. Abigael’s mother has left the house also, because her husband beat her when he learned that Abigael had fled. At this point Abigael’s father has also run away, because the police are looking for him.

The police officer brought Abigael to the MGEF office and asked if she could fill out an application. MGEF immediately accepted her into our Scholarship Program. Abigael is so happy and relieved to be able to go to school to pursue her dream of an education and to have escaped an unwanted marriage, which would have been a life of poverty and hard labor.
