Jemimah Santai

January 2026

Jemimah is a 13-year-old girl who comes from a polygamist family of two wives. She has five full siblings, and six half siblings. Both of Jemimah’s older sisters were married off at an early age. Jemimah went to school on her own. Her father did not support her education, but Jemimah managed to pay her school fees with help from her mother. Her father wanted Jemimah to undergo female genital cutting (FGC)and he wanted to marry her off to an elderly man over the Christmas break in 2025. Jemiah ran away to a nearby home. Her mother and she decided to find a rescue center for Jemimah to stay in. Someone told them about MGEF so they started the journey to Kajiado on foot. After two days of walking, a kind soul gave them fare for a bus ticket for the rest of the way. Jemimah was accepted into the MGEF scholarship program in December 2025. She started classes in January 2026. Her father agreed to not marry her if she was to go to school. Her aunt decided to stayed with her during the winter break to ensure she was not taken away for FGC and early marriage. Jemimah is happy to be in school.
