Maria is a 10 year old girl, who comes from a polygamist family of five wives and 28 children. Her father passed away five years ago, leaving the five wives to find the means to keep food on the table. The wives all believe in an education for their daughters, but they struggle to pay school fees. Maria’s mother sells her beadwork at the local market, but COVID19 caused her sales to stagnate. She has since sold most of her livestock in order to send her kids to school. She is not sure she will be able to continue to send Maria to school this year. The local MGEF board member was contacted. She filled out an application for Maria, and she was accepted to MGEF’s Scholarship Program in June 2021. She no longer will have worry about schools fees and can now concentrate on her school work.
